Andrei Kobyakov met with Sergei Lebedev

It is possible that some aspects concerning the development and operation of the Commonwealth of Independent States may need modernization. Prime Minister of Belarus Andrei Kobyakov made the relevant statement as he met with Sergei Lebedev, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary, on 4 February.

“We have always supported and will continue supporting the Commonwealth and facilitating its development. Certainly, the time when certain rethinking, some modernization is required is coming. But as far as its status, legal capacity, and fundamental charter requirements are concerned, we have no doubt about them,” stated the Prime Minister.

Andrei Kobyakov underlined that Belarus has always been an active member of the Commonwealth of Independent States and not only because the CIS HQ is located in Minsk. “It is a very important and useful organization for all citizens,” he said.

The Prime Minister remarked that people often fail to appreciate what they have. “Many things we take for granted exist only thanks to the Commonwealth of Independent States. The number includes everyday yet very important things like cooperation in energy matters, transport, communication, trade, and economic relations,” said Andrei Kobyakov.

As an example of another important accomplishment in advancing cooperation in the CIS format the Prime Minister of Belarus mentioned the free trade zone. “We are starting to appreciate it only when we encounter problems with sales. Although it is one of the vital elements of economic life that helps us deal with emerging difficulties among other things. At the same time it is one of the stimuli of economic growth,” believes the Belarusian head of government.

In turn, Sergei Lebedev thanked the Belarusian side for traditional support with the operation of the CIS Executive Committee and other CIS agencies. “We constantly feel this support and aid at the highest level,” he said.
