Aleksandr Turchin: Economic growth in Belarus should not jeopardize macroeconomic stability

It is necessary to keep the Belarusian economy growing without hurting macroeconomic stability, Prime Minister of Belarus Aleksandr Turchin told journalists.

“I want to calm down our citizens, our experts who are afraid that the new Government together with the National Bank will print so much money that the exchange rate will collapse, there will be hyperinflation and the economy will crumble. People working in the Government and the National Bank are competent enough to understand all the challenges and risks. The task is to maintain balanced economic growth. Yes, we have macroeconomic stability, we have growth. Sometimes it is very hard to balance them. If you ask me, if I had to choose between high growth and macroeconomic stability, I would choose the latter,” Aleksandr Turchin emphasized.

The Prime Minister noted that Belarus has achieved a high level of wages and would like to maintain momentum. “Today we must ensure economic growth without jeopardizing macroeconomic stability,” the head of Government emphasized.

During his report to Belarusian President Aleksandr Turchin said that he hoped to get approval for conceptual approaches to the program for 2026-2030.

“We will soon embark on the next five-year program. Therefore, I would like to present some conceptual approaches to the social and economic program and receive your approval,” Aleksandr Turchin said.

“We will return to this later. Lay it out, please, in general terms," Aleksandr Lukashenko stated.

“Well, we need to present the Government's action program to the parliament within two months,” Aleksandr Turchin explained.

Moreover, Aleksandr Turchin stated that belarusian Government had the task to implement all agreements with Russia.

According to Aleksandr Turchin, during the recent visit of the belarusian President to Russia, agreements were reached at the highest level. Now the Government's task is to implement them. “This means constant work at the level of deputy prime ministers, ministers, so everything is moving within the parameters that we need,” the Prime Minister said.

As reported earlier, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke about the gas and oil agreements with Russia as he met with Belarusian Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin to receive his report on 18 March.

“We have discussed all the issues that needed to be addressed, both one-on-one and, especially, together with the participation of our delegations [the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the recent official visit to Russia]. The Russian president gave the corresponding instructions on both gas and oil issues. He told me the following day that he talked to [Rosneft CEO Igor] Sechin about oil refining matters. This means that we just need to finalize these issues, to work out the pricing formula and so on,” the Head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also gave a number of instructions on the work of deputy prime ministers in the implementation of the plans of Belarusian-Russian cooperation. “The embassy should be involved in this work to the maximum,” he added.
