Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko was briefed on the results of the meeting with Lithuanian and Polish carriers and on the Government's proposals to resolve the situation with Lithuanian-registered trucks, Belarusian Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin told journalists following a meeting of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers.
Journalists asked the Prime Minister a question regarding yesterday's meeting with representatives of Lithuanian and Polish road carriers. “The Lithuanian and Polish carriers submitted a written request to the Belarusian President asking for assistance in resolving the current situation. The President instructed the Government to meet with them and discuss all issues. Yesterday we had a productive meeting; virtually everyone present spoke, asked their questions, and we answered them. The Government submitted a written report to the President on the outcomes of yesterday’s meeting and outlined the proposals for resolving this situation. This morning, I had a conversation with the Head of state, during which I once again reported on everything in detail. Therefore, today the President has absolutely all the information necessary to make a decision,” Aleksandr Turchin said.
Foreign carriers have essentially been abandoned by their own governments. Due to politically motivated decisions by their authorities, including transit restrictions and the closure of checkpoints, about a thousand trucks with Lithuanian registration found themselves stranded and unable to operate fully on their usual routes. Over the course of four months, the Belarusian side repeatedly attempted to resolve the situation with trucks with Lithuanian registration through political and diplomatic means, but Vilnius refused to engage in dialogue.
